Kigali International Community School – KICS is looking to hire a Social Emotional Learning Coordinator - SELC. Their mission is to advance student achievement by teaching all students the skills, knowledge, and attitudes they need to be successful academically, spiritually, and socially both today and tomorrow. The SELC partners with students, parents, staff, and the community to promote the continuous emotional, spiritual, and academic growth of each student.

KICS is located in the beautiful capital city of Kigali, Rwanda. The school is a college preparatory day school offering classes for students from pre-kindergarten through high school. KICS opened with its first class on September 14, 2006.

This Is Who We Are:
A Christ-Centered, US accredited non-profit school that offers children of all nationalities and religions an education similar to that offered by schools in the USA. We are a fully accredited member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), and Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA) and is endorsed by the Rwandan Ministry of Education as a sound educational institution.
Today, KICS has more than 315 students from 40 nations. The student body includes expatriate and national families living and working in Kigali in various industries. Many families work with embassies, multinationals, NGO’s, mission’s agencies, churches, and private businesses.
KICS is also the official site for U.S. College Board exams such as AP (Advanced Placement) and other U.S university entrance exams such as the PSAT, SAT and ACT.
Our staff come from 13 different countries, and are committed to integrating a Christ-centered worldview into all subject areas.

Role: Social Emotional Learning Coordinator
Reports to: Primary Principal
Job Purpose:
The Mission of the KICS Social Emotional Learning Coordinator is to advance student achievement by teaching all students the skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to be successful academically, spiritually, and socially both today and tomorrow. The SELC partners with students, parents, staff, and the community to promote the continuous emotional, spiritual, and academic growth of each student.

Required Qualifications:
• Passion for serving God in the context of social and emotional learning.
• Master’s degree in Counseling or Social Work (those in progress may be considered).
• Previous experience working with elementary students.
• A committed relationship to Jesus Christ

Preferred Qualifications:
• Master’s degree in Counseling or Social Work (those in progress may be considered).
• Experience collaborating with teachers and other staff to support student learning in the classroom.
• Experience collaborating with families in the development of academic and social/emotional goals for students.
• Elementary or primary teaching experience.
• Experience developing, writing and implementing Individualized Education Plans, 504 Accommodation Plans, Behavior Plans or the equivalent.
• Knowledge of cognitive and behavioral assessments and interpreting test data.
• Experience coordinating, monitoring and collaborating on a multi-disciplinary team.
• Knowledge or willingness to learn of US Federal law around ADA, FAPE and Civil Rights of persons with disabilities.
• Experience and/or working understanding of generational trauma and the common issues faced by TCK and ELL students.
• Training/experience in creative arts/music/play therapy an advantage.

Roles and Responsibilities:
• Implements a comprehensive school counseling curriculum; conducts and/or assists in planning and facilitating guidance learning activities in the classroom; consults with and supports teachers in facilitating the infusion of guidance activities into their regular education curricula, which includes our Bounce Back curriculum or another SEL Curriculum.
• Collects, organizes, and analyzes information about students through records, testing, interviews, and professional sources to appraise their interests, aptitudes, abilities, and personality characteristics for educational planning.
• Works with families and/or students individually and in small groups to help them understand, overcome, and resolve academic, behavioral, social, and emotional concerns.
• Consults with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students; provides guidance to teachers and staff in dealing with students with academic, behavioral, social, or emotional problems; assists teachers in identifying students with special needs and special abilities.
• Teachers social/emotional curriculum (Bounce Back) to kinder through 5th grade classes on a weekly basis.
• Participates with teams in establishing and planning respective roles in modifying a student’s behavior; develops individualized student behavior management programs; makes recommendations; provides feedback to team members and parents.
• Maintains appropriate reports and records on each assigned student; protects each student’s confidentiality; provides specific reports according to procedures or as assigned.
• Reviews, evaluates, and revises the school counseling program on an annual basis with input from staff and administration using evaluation self-study; reviews and modifies the counseling program calendar; evaluates guidance learning activities.
• Work to help students through struggles related to sexual identity with compassion, empathy, and Biblical perspective.
• Work collaboratively within the student support services and the primary team in order to provide holistic support to students, teachers and families.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Global-minded outlook, with a sensitivity to understand those of other cultures, faiths and backgrounds as being part of God’s creation.
• An appreciation for academic and personal issues facing Third Culture kids and the host culture of Rwanda.
