JOB DETAILS:
Senior Officer, Youth Leader
Description

AWF’s Charles R Wall Conservation Leadership & Management Program (Wall Fellowship) is one strategy to develop this needed capacity. The Wall fellowship is an intensive one-year program that seeks to develop high-potential entry-mid career individuals that have been identified to take up higher leadership roles. Successful candidates will gain real-world experience and will have necessary leadership skills to serve in higher roles.
In addition, Africa boasts a large youth population, many of whom are dedicated in biodiversity conservation. While we have a vibrant youth population committed to biodiversity, they are often not skilled enough to contribute meaningfully to policy processes and there are limited opportunities for them to do so, both at a national and international level. It has also become evident in various meetings of Multilateral Environmental Agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity that African countries tend to have smaller delegations of negotiators and hence require both technical and non-technical support throughout the meetings.

There is therefore a greater need to build the capacity of young people, and nurture them to start contributing into policy making processing at different levels and build a succession plan such that in future, they become policy negotiators that are vested in the reality and interest of Africa. To this effect, AWF has establishment the Young African Policy Fellows (YAPF). An initiative that aims to:
• Equip African youth with necessary skills to be biodiversity policy negotiators.
• Involve African youth in the national and international policy making processes.
• Provide necessary support to the African Group of Negotiators on Biodiversity.
To achieve this, AWF is seeking to recruit an experienced individual to help lead the implementation of the Charles R Wall Conservation Leadership and Management Programme, the Young African Policy Fellows programme and other Leadership programmes.
