The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) – a member of the CGIAR Consortium (www.cgiar.org) – develops technologies, innovative methods, and new knowledge that better enable farmers, especially smallholders, to make agriculture competitive and profitable as well as sustainable and resilient. CIAT conducts research for development in tropical regions of Latin America, Africa, and Asia (www.ciat.cgiar.org).
International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is an international non-profit research-for-development (R4D) organization created in 1967, governed by a Board of Trustees, and supported primarily by the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). IITA’s R4D is anchored on the development needs of Sub-Saharan Africa and develops agricultural solutions with partners to tackle hunger and poverty by reducing producer and consumer risks, enhancing crop quality and productivity, and generating wealth from agriculture.
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) seeks to recruit a “Research and Project Associate” to assist the Project leader to implement research activities of the Cassava Agribusiness Seed Systems (CASS) Project. The aim of the project is to test, evaluate and upscale end-user-preferred cassava varieties with strong resistance to Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD) and Cassava Mosaic Diseases (CMD) through different types of cassava agribusiness seed systems (CASS) models. The project is implemented by a strong consortium comprising of the leading international organizations in research and development.
Position summary
CIAT, on behalf of IITA, is seeking for a Research and Project Associate who will assist the Project Leader to Support project partners to develop and implement research activities of the project, produce timely technical and M&E reports, undertake data analysis and publications and capacity building initiatives of the project through targeted trainings of the project partners. .

  Main duties and responsibilities include:
• Assist the project leader in the day to day management activities of the project
• Ensure and maintain a good working relationship between IITA and the project partners
• Support project partners to develop and implement research activities of the project
• Assist the project leader to produce timely technical and M&E reports
• Support the project leader to undertake data analysis and publications
• Support capacity building initiatives of the project through targeted training of the project partners
• Ensure safety of project equipment and materials under his or her care
• Undertake any other delegated responsibilities


The candidate shall have the following competencies, skills and experience:
• MSc-degree in Agriculture economics, preferably with specialization in Agribusiness.
• At least 2 years of research work experience in Rwanda
• A good understanding of cassava value chain, and cassava seed systems in Rwanda will be an added advantage
• Ability to communicate fluently in English (oral and written), French and Kinyarwanda.
• Good interpersonal skills to work in multi-cultural environment
• Experience in partnerships management
• Ability to travel extensively and work extra hours in the field implementing project activities
• Ability to analyze data and produce technical reports and publications
Terms of employment:
This is a nationally recruited position and will be based at the IITA Offices in Kigali, Rwanda. The contract will be for a one-year period, subject to probation period of three (3) months, renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
