SMART Project is a three and half years’ project implemented by DUHAMIC-ADRI in partnership with WFP (World Food Program) with the funding from of the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) under a field level agreement signed between two organizations (DUHAMIC-ADRI and WFP). SMART Project is an acronym of the project name “Sustainable Market Alliance and Asset Creation for Resilient Communities and Gender Transformation”. This project has the objective to enhance food security and resilience to shocks, strengthening smallholder farmer production and market access, and building community and government capacities in the areas of nutrition, gender and climate-sensitive social protection. The implementation of this project will contribute to community resilience through a package of support, including a stronger soil and water management asset base, livelihood strengthening and diversification, farmer organization capacity strengthening and access to inputs and markets, and social cohesion and gender transformation activities.
The project outputs contribute to WFP’s strategic objectives under the second outcome of its country strategic plan (2019-2023) that focuses on ensuring that vulnerable populations in food-insecure communities and areas have improved access to adequate and nutritious food all year. It will specifically contribute in achieving expected results for the output 2.3 of the above-mentioned outcome that aims to ensure that food-insecure people in vulnerable communities benefit from improved assets and skills to increase their resilience to climate-related shocks.
DUHAMIC-ADRI implemented this Project in two districts: Rutsiro District (Ruhango and Mukura Sectors) and Kayonza District (Murama Sector). The project is aligned with existing integrated community development model of WFP Food Assistance for Assets schemes and it outsources Rwandan tailored social protection programmes known as National vision 2020 Umurenge Programme (VUP) to create job and increase production among small holder farmer through creation of land-based productive assets and organization of community members in functional and socio-economic groups for the valorization of the assets to be created.
Under this partnership, DUHAMIC-ADRI worked with local authorities and farm-plots owners to rehabilitate arable lands with bench terracing, progressive terracing, marshland reclamation and establishment of community small scale irrigation.
On these terraces’ agroforestry trees and penissetum cuttings have been planted to restore physical properties of the soil after its rehabilitation. With assessment of those agroforestry tree survival rate, it has been realized that some of them did not afford to survive where the assessment team decided to recommend SMART Project to supply more agroforestry seedlings to compensate those ones which failed to grow.
Therefore, Through the partnership between WFP and DUHAMIC-ADRI to implement “Sustainable Market Alliance and Asset Creation for Resilient Communities and Gender Transformation/SMART Project”, DUHAMIC-ADRI would like to invite all professional and experienced companies specialized in supply of cuttings of Pennisetum Purpureum (Variety of Napier grasses), agroforestry seedlings, fruits trees and organic manure.
