Job Purpose
Carnegie Mellon University is seeking an experienced tutor of English as a second language (ESL) to join an expanding team of experienced ESL instructors at its location in Rwanda, Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa). The ESL tutor will collaborate with instructors within the
ESL program, assisting them to support our students throughout their learning journey and prepare them for career success.
The role
The ESL tutor will collaborate with instructors within the ESL program, assisting them to support our students throughout their learning journey and prepare them for career success. The ESL program is mainly focused on students at upper-intermediate (B2) level as well as a few at intermediate (B1) level. It is available to advanced (C1) and proficiency (C2) level students at their request. Professional skills development is targeted at all levels.
Responsibilities
• Support the Analytical Writing and Linguistic Foundations courses by grading and providing
• feedback on students’ writing, presenting about general areas of feedback in class, taking
• attendance and holding office hours.
• Provide ESL writing support on technical courses such as grading and providing feedback on
• written assignments.
• Provide feedback on a variety of student projects including professional profiles, project
• posters and student club reports.
• Research, develop and produce pedagogical materials for use in ESL and technical courses as well as for student self-access.
• Manage the ESL team mailbox and respond to student and faculty requests for writing
• support.
• Participate in team planning and general faculty meetings.
Requirements
Essential
• Qualification in education or English language instruction for non-native speakers.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience teaching ESL to adults using interactive, learner-centered methodology.
• Highly proficient user of English (either native speaker or minimum overall score of 110 in TOEFL or 8 in IELTS).
• Extensive experience in assessing, grading and offering feedback on written academic assignments.
• Critical approach to teaching founded on understanding, respect and empowerment.
• Flexible, adaptable and self-motivated, with a collaborative approach to teamwork.
• Pro-active attitude and passion for education, with a commitment to ongoing professional development.
Desirable
• Experience of American (or equivalent) post-graduate education system.
• Post-graduate degree-holder.
• Experience of teaching in the sub-Saharan African context, particularly Rwanda.
• Skilled in use of a variety of educational technologies.
• Knowledge of computer engineering and/or experience teaching computer engineering students.
• Able to manage diverse and competing work demands
