JOB DETAILS:
American Refugee Committee (ARC) ARC works with its partners and constituencies to provide opportunities and expertise to refugees, displaced people and host communities – to better survive conflicts and crisis, and to rebuild lives of dignity, health, security, and self-sufficiency. ARC presently works in and with partners in ten countries globally. ARC has consistently operated in Rwanda since 1994, and today has a strong and committed team of over 200 regular, full-time national staff and partners – implementing programs in Primary health care, RH, HIV and Nutrition, WASH, Shelter/Infrastructure, and SGBV & Protection. .
Job Responsibilities:
• Interview patients and provide a physical examination to guide diagnosis
• Promote and organize ANC (Ante-Natal Care) and PNC (Post Natal Care)
• Carry out deliveries according to MoH and international health standard
• Understand and use all maternity equipment and tools (extractor, MVA, delivery bed, partogram, resuscitation machine)
• Perform postpartum examinations and treatments to ensure that patients and infants are responding normally.
• Administer medications (e.g. ergometrine injection) after delivery under the supervision of Head Nurse / Medical Doctor
• Discuss cases with Medical doctors to ensure they are appropriately and holistically managed.
• Educate patients in different health and nutrition topics including diet in pregnancy and lactation and basic prenatal and postnatal health practices including hygiene
• Maintain Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) standards in the maternity ward
• Manage referrals for complicated pregnancies, to be referred to District Hospital with Senior Health Coordinator and/or Medical Doctor approval
• Provide a projection of gamma globulin that will be needed based on tests and in case of rhesus incompatibility, request gamma-globulin within 48 hours, and make sure it is administered promptly
• Daily maintain and manage records for pregnant women, deliveries, and postpartum mothers
• Provide obstetrics data and statistics to the Head Nurse and Data officer on a routine and ongoing basis for reporting purposes
• Provide family planning services to clients, including counseling, sensitization on family planning methods, dispensing contraceptives, and follow-up
• Conduct informal and formal training for Community health workers in charge of maternal health
• Conduct training for nurses on Obstetric/Gynecological practices and standards
• Coordinate with other health staff on self-assessment of obstetrical skills and challenges
• Coordinate with other health staff on the referral of obstetrics patients to other needed health services
• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Job Qualifications:
• A1 degree in midwifery, preferably a background in nursing
• 3 years of minimum experience in midwifery in Rwanda
• Registration with the National Nursing and Midwifery Council
• Knowledge of newborn vital signs, family planning methods
• Knowledge of Ministry of Health standards and protocols for maternal/child health and obstetric health
• Ability to provide Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC) training to health staff and CHWs
• Knowledge of the regional political and social conditions
• Kinyarwanda, English, and French oral/writing skills, Kiswahili oral skills also preferred
• Excellent organizational, administrative and management skills
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment
• Experience working in protracted refugee situation and/or previous experience in Rwanda health system a plus
• Experience in managing and working with a multicultural staff
• Strong participatory leadership and interpersonal skills
• Ability to motivate and counsel staff working in a refugee camp environment
