Job Description
The Head of Boarding is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the Boarding House to ensure provision of the highest standard and quality of care for all boarders at Green Hills Academy (GHA). The Head of Boarding reports to the Head of School, serves on the Senior Leadership Team and collaborates with other senior leaders. The Head of Boarding also contributes to strategic planning and to the achievement of strategic goals.
Responsibilities
Learner Wellbeing and Academic Support
• Develop strong relationships with all boarders, knowing them as individuals and giving appropriate support and encouragement to enable them to thrive intellectually, academically, physically, socially and emotionally
• Embed the development of the attributes of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile into the Boarding House
• Review, improve and follow processes and procedures to identify and respond proactively to any pastoral and wellbeing matters affecting a learner in the Boarding House
• Maintain a high-quality induction program for boarders that enables them to confidently manage the transition to boarding, its structures, processes, procedures and culture
• Manage and maintain a high-quality program and structure of academic support for boarders, appropriate to their stage of schooling and the demands of their academic program
• Maintain close and collaborative working relationships with academic staff to monitor and provide tailored academic support to each learner as needed
Behavior Management
• Manage and maintain a Code of Conduct for all boarders that outlines their responsibilities and obligations as members of the Boarding House. In collaboration with the Middle School and High School Principals, manage and maintain clear behavioral management procedures that align with School policy
• Undertake behavior management actions and consequences with learners, when appropriate, to ensure that all standards of conduct and behavior are met and maintained
• Escalate matters of serious misbehavior to the Principals and Head of School for guidance, input and participation, as needed
Parent Engagement• Ensure appropriate communication processes and protocols with all boarding parents so that they can connect easily with, and understand, their child’s life and progress at GHA
• Maintain open, professional contact with each parent in line with GHA’s communication protocols
• Maintain accurate records of all contact and discussions with parents
• Approve and manage in consultation with parents/caregivers all boarder leave and holiday arrangements
• Utilize exemplary and effective communications strategies
Staff Management• Manage and develop staff to enable the efficient operation of the Boarding House
• Monitor and evaluate the performance of all staff to ensure the highest quality of care and support for each learner
• Apply human resource policies and practices in all interactions with staff
Marketing and Public Relations• Collaborate with the Director of Marketing and Public Relations to promote Boarding aggressively to achieve the goal to fill the Boarding House to capacity
• Coordinate and lead Boarding House tours for all prospective parents and learners
• Actively participate in marketing events to promote the Boarding House
Technology• Establish clear protocols for the use of technology within the Boarding House, appropriate to learning and social and developmental needs
Operations and Asset Management• Lead and manage the daily operations of the Boarding House, setting appropriate routines and standards of performance, including
• Food service and nutrition
• Security and safety
• Hygiene and cleaning of facilities
• Asset maintenance – maintaining a healthy and safe environment
• Procurement and purchasing
• Ensure all activities of the Boarding House are in full compliance with work, health and safety standards and statutory requirements
• Manage the Boarding House operations within the agreed budgetary framework set by GHA
• Maintain accurate records of all activities in line with the systems set by the Executive Director Corporate Services and report to the College Executive regarding Boarding House performance
• Ensure all Boarding House assets are maintained appropriately, working closely with the Head of Finance and Operations Director to ensure the maintenance and security of all assets
Requirements• Bachelor's degree in education or related field
• Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a Boarding House, ensuring full compliance with all statutory requirements and community standards of operation
• A successful and proven record as an educational leader in a school environment and in a multinational Boarding House
• An understanding of the needs of adolescent boys and girls, their key developmental stages and the appropriate strategies and interventions to support them
• A proven track record in leading staff in a Boarding House
• A demonstrated track record of embracing, utilizing and optimizing technology and social media effectively to connect and communicate with parents and learners
• Highly developed administrative, organizational, planning and time management skills
• Excellent relationship management skills
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize conflicting tasks as required
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
• Confident, articulate and engaging, with a personal warmth that engenders mutual respect with all boarders, their parents and GHA staff
• Integrity, courage, good judgement, resilience and balanced decision making
• A caring and considerate individual who can appropriately empathize with and support others and foster a calm environment
• Driven to achieve the best outcomes for each learner and GHA
• A collaborative leader with the ability to be decisive and directive where situations demand
• An understanding of the wellbeing of young people, their needs and ways of supporting them
