The Opportunity
We are looking for a HSE Co-ordinator to advise on HSE risks, controls, processes and systems for our exploration projects in Rwanda within the RTX (Rio Tinto Exploration) Africa- Eurasia Region (AER) and provide HSE assurance of RTX HSE performance against RTX/RT standards.
What the role entails
This role is a great opportunity to provide technical advice to RTX for our projects in Rwanda. Reporting to the RTX AER HSE Business Partner, you will be:
• Collaborating with project managers and project teams to implement risk management processes. Supporting various aspects of project health and safety planning activities, including in-field risk management and hazard reduction.
• Developing and executing annual HSE plans and establishing priorities for the projects in Rwanda with reference to customer needs, business plans, Rio Tinto standards, RTX Procedures and statutory requirements.
• Contributing to the development and delivery of health and safety training. Providing coaching and on-the-job health and safety training to project staft.
• Contracting external service providers, as required, to provide expert and specialist services which address identified needs and risks, managing external providers in line with Rio Tinto procurement requirements and ensuring value for money.
• Implementing contractor management standards and procedures to ensure contractors comply with Rio Tinto and statutory HSE standards and requirements, conducting contractor pre-qualification and performance audits.
• Conducting investigations into incidents and near misses. Establishing facts, identifying causes, presenting findings, and recommending corrective actions.
What you will need for this role
To succeed in this role, you will have:
• Bachelor’s degree in relevant disciplines such as health, safety, environment and/or an engineering degree.
• HSE experience in managing HSE risks with requirements applicable to a complex operational environment, with field based and geographically dispersed workplaces.
• Well-developed skills in delivering HSE training, including adapting HSE training and educational materials for the needs of specific audiences.
• Sound organizational and project management skills to plan, manage and deliver work including the ability to manage within resource and budget constraints.
• Ability to provide technical leadership in HSE at a project level with the ability to develop the skills of employees involved in HSE delivery
• Ability to work productively in a multi-language, cross cultural environment.
• Practical problem-solving skills in researching and resolving HSE issues with the ability to develop solutions to non- standard problems.
• Fluency in English
• Ability to travel for field work (3 weeks in field, 10 days oft)
• Driving licence (and driving experience) is highly desirable. priority
