Title: Consultant for training partner coffee washing stations and exporters on price risks management (PRM)

Location: Huye (19 participants) and Karongi (22 participants)

 Program Description:

TechnoServe seeks to recruit an experienced individual consultant to provide training on coffee price risk management (PRM) to coffee washing station managers/owners. The consultancy is supported by the EU and JDE Peets funded Rwanda Ikawa Nziza Cyane (Best Quality Coffee) Program which aims at improving the performance of an inclusive, sustainable and profitable value chain for high quality coffee.

  • Position Description:

The consultant will need to provide training materials and in-person support to 2 full day training sessions for 41 coffee washing station managers/ owners from 6 Districts of operation namely Karongi, Nyamasheke, Rusizi, Nyamagabe,Huye and Gisagara in the area of price risk management to include (1) awareness of key risks in the coffee sector (2) mitigation strategies, and (3) rules of thumb for the negotiation and management of coffee sales contracts. 

Training will take place at 2 sitesKarongi for 22 participants in the West and Huye for 19 participants in the Southern province. Transport for the consultant will be catered for by the project.

  1. Scope of the Work

The main duties of the consultant consist of:

  • Prepare training documentation as pertains to coffee washing station PRM needs and opportunities (includes best-practice recommendations)
  • Conduct training of coffee washing station managers and create action plans for the harvest season.
  • Prepare a report with key recommendations and PRM strategies for participating CWS.

This consultancy will be conducted for a total of 8 working days as presented in the table below:

  1. Expected Deliverables:

The consultant is expected to deliver the following documents:

  1. Training materials including best practices for CWS Price Risk Management
  2. Report with key recommendations for participating CWS.

The report will be submitted to TechnoServe/Rwanda INC in both hard and soft copies and all deliverables will be the property of the project.

Required Skills and Experience:

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:

  • The candidate must have at least bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, Agribusiness, Economics, commerce, Marketing, Food sciences or related fields with at least 10 years of working experience in coffee related businesses.
  • The consultant must have proven practical experience in the coffee value chain especially familiarity in the areas of price risks management and access to market.
  • Good understanding of the challenges, opportunities and regulatory framework in the coffee value chain of Rwanda
  • Having techniques and methods for teaching adult people
  • Ability to prepare training modules and presentations with strong communication skills
  • Having conducted similar technical assistance is an added advantage.
  • The candidate must be able to communicate in both oral and writing of English and Kinyarwanda languages
