The Coffee Innovation Fund aims to support innovative and scalable solutions to increase profitability and market access of small-holder coffee farmers. GIZ partners with local coffee companies and coffee cooperatives. Together with the partners we pilot innovative solutions focusing on farming solutions, transparent and inclusive business models, and access to new markets. Currently 5 projects that started in 2021 are being implemented and we are kicking off the implementation of 4 additional projects that will run until March 2023.

Tropic Coffee company is among the new partners implementing projects selected under the coffee Innovation Fund. The objective of the CIF-funded project from Tropic coffee is to strengthen the smallholder-based supply chain for specialty coffee in Cyato/ Nyamasheke district and increase smallholder income through sustainable innovations in compost-based coffee farming and improved parabolic drying.

Tropic Coffee is a vertically integrated, dedicated producer and exporter of specialty coffee from Rwanda. Established in 2015 by two young Rwandan entrepreneurs, Tropic Coffee currently operates 3 washing stations and sources coffee from 3 farmer cooperatives with over 1,000 farmers, of which 50% are women.
GIZ is contributing to the joint project by procuring equipment and services such as the training outlined here.

Description of assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to provide technical support to the project on. The consultant will:
• Develop a combined training module in Kinyarwanda on Vermi-Based compost Making, saving, and lending scheme and Cooperative management, and distribute 300 printed copies of the module to farmers and Tropic Coffee workers
• Organize 250 coffee farmers into 10 Farmer Field School (FFs)
• Select 10 FFS plots with farmers where additional trainings will be conducted.
• Provide training to 250 farmers on Vermi-Based compost Making by conducting onsite demonstration at the Coffee Washing Station and in respective FFs plots.
• Ensure the distribution of organic compost (from Tropic Coffee Washing Station) to target farmers.
• Coordinate and oversee the follow up visits to target farmers by Tropic Coffee agronomist on the adoption of Vermi-Based compost Making and Application
• Provide financial literacy training on saving and lending scheme to farmers and introduce VSLAs in the 10 FFS.
• Provide training on Cooperative management (governance and financial management) to cooperative leaders and farmers.
All training sessions and follow up visits will be conducted from Nyamashake district where the project is implemented. The 250 farmer participants will acquire knowledge and skills, to teach back the same techniques to the rest of the farmers from one Tropic coffee washing station in Western Province within the project area of operation.
Coordination of the training sessions (including organizing and inviting participants) and training attendance records management will be handled by Tropic Coffee.
The consultant is expected to follow the COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions of the Government of Rwanda and is expected to adapt the training format accordingly.

Deliverables
The consultant is expected to provide the below deliverables within a total number of up to 85 working days. The timeline will be agreed upon and adapted as necessary based on the needs of Tropic Coffee and the Covid-19 situation.

Data processing and management on behalf of the client
Personal data collected by Tropic Coffee may be entrusted to the contractor in order to fulfil the contract. The contractor is obliged to protect this data under the standards of the GDPR, in particular the Art. 44-50 GDPR. The contractor shall act as an independent data controller for the personal data that he processes in connection with the contract and shall comply with the applicable obligations under data protection legislation.

Reporting and timeframe of the assignment
The consultant will work closely with Tropic Coffee team. All official reporting will be to GIZ. All activities included in this ToR will have to be completed within up to 85 working days from July 2022 to November 2022. At the end of the training program and follow up visits, the consultant will submit a report of all activities conducted and financial report to GIZ within 15 days of completion of the assignment.

Key characteristics of the consultant/ the consulting company
For this assignment, the following characteristics and competencies are essential:
Education: Bachelor's degree in agriculture, agricultural-based sciences, natural resources management, or related field

Professional experience:
• Minimum 5 to 7 years of experience in farmer training, Training of Trainers, Demonstrations Farms, Farmer Field Schools, and Lead Farmer training models and working with smallholder coffee farmers.
• At least 3 years' experience training in Good Agricultural Practices, cooperative management and saving and lending scheme.
• Demonstrated ability in design and development of training materials, training curriculum, and evaluation of training interventions

Experience in working in the region
• At least 3 years demonstrated experience in working with smallholder farmers in Rwanda and East African Region

Language skills:
• Good business language skills in English and Kinyarwanda.

Technical Proposal:
• A cover letter expressing your interest in this assignment
• Technical proposal with a brief description of why you would be considered as the most suitable for the assignment, relevant expertise, and a detailed, clear methodology, on how will be your approach to complete the assignment (no more than 1 page).
• The Technical Proposal should also contain the CVs of the experts proposed in accordance with the terms of reference. The CVs shall not exceed 4 pages.
• Company registration certificate (RDB)
• VAT registration certificate
• Latest tax clearance certificate
• Proof of successful completion of related assignments.
Financial Proposal: indicates the all-inclusive total contract price, supported by a breakdown of all costs. The costs must be in RWF and VAT excluded. Please calculate your price bid based exactly on the following costing requirements:
Assignment of personnel: up to 85 working days
• Other costs: Transportation of compost, Transport fees, printing of Module (300 copies), snacks and water for farmer participants during training sessions facilitated by the contractor
• Travel costs: included in expert days
