Chief Operations Officer
We are looking for a Chief Operations Officer who will oversee all of Ampersand’s operations across all our markets, execute our strategic objectives and maintaining our culture of exemplary service.

About Ampersand
Ampersand has grown from a tiny, bootstrapped R&D garage project in 2018 into East Africa's leading electric vehicle operation, with a team of over 170 staff drawn from diverse backgrounds and we plan to see all 5 million taxi motorbikes in East Africa electric by 2030. We are rapidly scaling our operations, and we are looking for innovative professionals who are passionate about clean energy and environmental impact to lead and contribute to our rapid growth.

About the role
Ampersand is seeking a highly experienced operations leader capable of managing a diverse and complex team of professionals across our key departments. The Chief Operations Officer will oversee all of Ampersand’s operations across all our markets and will support the CEO in creating a world where motorcycle transport is cleaner, executing our strategic objectives, and maintaining our culture of exemplary service to our customers. The COO will report to the CEO and will handle the following responsibilities:

Strategic Vision and Follow Through
• Working hand in hand with other members of the Leadership team, set strategic, operational objectives for the business, along with systems of accountability and performance management. Ensuring the set objectives are implemented
• Develop policies and operating procedures that correlate with the Strategies
• Implement effective processes and standard operating procedures across the company.
• Ownership of overall Ampersand operational performance and efficiency including revenues and profit margins, product utilization rates, and customer satisfaction metrics.
• Work with various departments to ensure set budgets are adhered to
• Spot operational problems or potential problems and come up with solutions quickly.

Battery Charging Operations
• Accountable for the overall performance and operations for our network of battery swap stations. Including station facilities, charge teams, and secondary services.
• Manage, maintain, and oversee partner relationships within our markets and support implementation and drive new business opportunities.
• Guide, support, and oversee global charge teams in the buildup of charge infrastructure across our business.
• Support in management of operations innovation trials to maximize battery longevity and station efficiency.

Production and Supply Chain
• Having worked in complex manufacturing environments, oversee the entire production process and maintenance of production activities so as to obtain maximum efficiency, quality, profitability, and safety.
• Analyze production data so as to identify and resolve issues or bottlenecks.
• Accountable for supply chain and for continuously improving supply chain quality, reliability, and better economics.

Sales and Marketing
• In conjunction with Leadership establishes sales territories and quotas and oversees to ensure targets are achieved
• Manages and oversees Customer Service and ensures customer retention strategies are in place and successful
• In charge of our online presence

Across all our roles, we look for professionals with strong work ethics, and the ability to manage shifting priorities and unforeseen challenges. For this role specifically, you will have:
• At least 15 years of working experience, with a good percentage of work in emerging markets
• Experience in scaling start-up enterprises plus knowledge of E-Mobility or the energy sector
• A proven track record of operational success in manufacturing/auto/motorcycle/energy distribution and/or retail sectors
• Experience in production of goods and not just re-selling would be a distinct bonus
• Excellent communication skills both oral and written and good collaboration with teams
• A team captain and coach.

A competitive compensation and benefits package commensurate with international market rates will be offered, including Ampersand stock options.
A relocation package will be provided if required.
Job location
This role will be based in Kigali, Rwanda, with frequent travel to our offices across East Africa and beyond.
