Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the following 2 vacant positions which exist at the Clinton Development Initiative (CDI). The successful candidates will be based in Bugesera or Ngoma. This is not an expatriate position.
Agriculture Development Officers in Bugesera and Ngoma, Clinton Development Initiative Rwanda
Role Purpose
The Agricultural Development Officer (ADO) will help farmers and the communities to increase crop and livestock productivity, household incomes and food security, health and nutritional status. The ADO is the key frontline staff member, at district level, for CDI projects in the field and is responsible for 16 hub farmers and 240 clubs (on average) per district. S/he is the first engagement officer CDI has with new district communities providing agricultural support and strengthening and introducing new groups to CAB and also is the main link between CDI and local communities, facilitates formation of farmer groups and larger organizations, promotes community development and mobilization, and provides detailed training on best practice agronomy (targeting smallholder lead cash crops such as soya beans, maize, sorghum, potatoes, sunflower and dry beans). S/he will also promote value-addition activities, disseminate market information, as well as mainstream gender issues and climate change. The ADO is responsible for collecting monitoring data and providing feedback to farmers and other stakeholders such as government and other partners. S/he regularly, with the help of Agricultural Development Manager (ADM), participates in district level stakeholder meetings and identifies opportunities for collaboration and partnerships. S/he captures success and impact stories on an ongoing basis.
Requirements
• A certificate in agricultural sciences, agroforestry, cooperative/association management, or project management Bachelor’ Degree preferred.
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in training farmers on improved agricultural technologies and supervision of farmer cooperatives and associations, including at least two years of work in rural areas and willing to live with rural community
• Must possesses a clean driving license and must be trained with the ability to safely ride motorbike, including in rural areas and on non-paved roads.
• Critical thinker and fast learner and ability to help farmers, local leaders, and other stakeholders in the assigned area in their decision to join the program.
• Must have strong numerical skills (ability to run basic financial and economic analysis e.g. gross margin analysis, fertilizer calibration, determination of plant population, etc.).
• Understanding of agricultural and extension methodologies, markets, cooperatives, agriculture financing, and climate change.
• Fluent in Kinyarwanda with good command in English to participate in meeting and communicate with supervisors.
