German Sparkassenstiftung for international Cooperation (DSIK) was established in 1992 with the global mission of financial sector development and financial inclusion in developing countries. Since 2009, DSIK has been permanently active in partnership projects with focus on strengthening the microfinance sector and vocational education in Rwanda. Currently, the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is financially supporting projects which are implemented in collaboration with the Rwanda Institute of Cooperatives, Entrepreneurship and Microfinance (RICEM) and the Université Libre de Kigali (ULK), as well as with the Government of Rwanda, in particular with the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MINICOM) and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MINECOFIN). The ongoing project activities in Rwanda are organized into a regional project on Eastern Africa level. DSIK in Eastern Africa is operating in Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda and is in close exchange with DSIK project activities in more than 50 countries worldwide. The activities in Rwanda are in accordance with the Rwandan national development strategies, Vision 2050, and the National Strategy for Transformation (NST). 

DSIK, as a part of its project activities, is currently conducting research assignments in collaboration with its project partners MINICOM and MINECOFIN. 

In this respect, German Sparkassenstiftung for International Cooperation (DSIK) intends to recruit an experienced short-term consultant to act as Research Assistant and to facilitate the successful completion of the research assignments.

Reporting line:

Reporting to the Head of Program Microfinance Professionalization 

Deployment location:

The main location for the assignments will be Kigali. However, it is expected that the selected consultant will conduct frequent field missions to the other provinces in Rwanda. 

Duration of Assignment:

Given the timeline for the research assignments to be completed, the contracted consultant days shall be limited with 60 days to be completed within the time frame of 3 months after contracting.  

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Perform secondary research, including statistical analysis based on data provided
  • Coordinate and conduct the data collection, to be conducted through interviews and run focus group discussions (in Kinyarwanda)
  • Keep diligent notes of insights and findings collected during the data collection process
  • Perform data analyses on the data collected through primary and secondary data collection and collation
  • Support report writing, including data visualizations
  • Prepare support materials for reporting including creation of presentations and data overviews
  • Attend meetings with DSIK team members and project partners related to the assignments
  • Further ad hoc requests from DSIK team members related to the two research assignments.
  • Other tasks as assigned by the management

Profile/ Core Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, Business, Statistics, Politics, or any related field
  • Minimum 3+ years’ work experience related to mixed research methods (to be proved by sample of research conducted)
  • Experience working on research assignments with International NGOs is an added advantage.
  • Experience in mixed methods research
  • Exemptional Statistical analysis and software skills are required, and hands-on experience in quantitative and qualitative software programs (Excel, SPSS, STATA, etc)
  • Demonstrated experience using digital data collection tools
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English and Kinyarwanda
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and result-oriented skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Systematic working style, and strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Always maintain confidentiality and discretion.
  • Strong time-management skills, self-motivated and proactivity
  • Willingness to travel to remote areas for field work within Rwanda.
