Community Protection Officer
About the Role:
The community protection officer will support the implementation of the community protection services activities in Mahama refugee camp and will closely work with the Child protection coordinator to represent the Save the Children community protection team in the identification and registration process of vulnerable refugees, support during distribution of food and NFIs; mainstreaming of vulnerabilities among the refugee communities. He/She will be based in the field. He /she will ensure vulnerable refugees have timely and adequate access to basic services by conducting rapid assessment and follow-up of all identified cases. The incumbent will represent Save the Children during the registration of new arrivals and ensure that the most vulnerable persons are identified, registered, supported and followed up.
Location: Kirehe(Mahama Camp) .

Community Protection Officer responsibilities:
• Identify vulnerable group (i.e.: the elderly people, people living with disabilities, unaccompanied pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses)
• Develop and update the vulnerable group database
• Ensure vulnerable groups identified have access to humanitarian services within the camp
• Make recommendation to the emergency protection coordinator on support to beneficiaries with special needs
• Participate in weekly camp coordination meeting and community service meeting
• Organize and conduct child-safeguarding training targeting all save the children volunteers
• Establish communication links with the refugees to ensure good two-way communication between the refugees and the respective partner’s agencies providing specific assistance for them.
• Support the development of and /or strengthen appropriate community protection structures including referral mechanisms, mechanisms to ensure Participation of women and other vulnerable groups in decision-making and ensure that all groups within the population are appropriately represented.
• Comply with all relevant Save the children policies and procedures with respect to child rights and safeguarding, health and safety, equal opportunity and other relevant policies.
• Facilitate, collect and report information regarding the overall situation of protection risks of PSN in Mahama camp.
• Ensure proper management and safety of Save the Children property.
• Document best practice, case studies, and learning
• Share information on field-level successes and challenges with the Child Protection Coordinator.
• Ensure that major challenges are flagged early, and addressed in an appropriate way;
• Facilitate, collect and report information regarding the overall situation of community protection risks in Mahama camp
• Support the preparation of all procurement and administrative documents required for community protection implementation
• Program Management

• Capacity Building and Program quality


Job Skills:
• Skills and experience in working with vulnerable groups especially, people living with disabilities, the elderly, single mothers and child-headed households using international humanitarian standards.
• Good international skills and ability to communicate at all levels
• Proven diplomacy skills
• Ability to work with limited supervision from the line manager
• Fluency in written and spoken English and computer literate
• Ability to communicate fluently in Kinyarwanda, good spoken English, French, and Kirundi
• communicate to and understanding of Save the Children‘s aim, values, and principles


Qualifications and experience
• University degree in social sciences, sociology, public administration, community development, arts, social administration
• Having experience working with people with special needs in humanitarian context and/or 2 years’ experience working with vulnerable people within institutions or community
