Headquartered in Kigali in Rwanda, Ampersand E-Mobility (https://www.ampersand.solar/) is achieving the world’s first true mass-market shift to electric vehicles, a vital tipping point in the fight against climate change, through providing electric motorcycles to moto taxis drivers in East Africa.
Ampersand’s electric motorcycles offer savings that can double a driver’s income, in addition to reducing carbon emissions by more than 75%. Converting just one petrol motorbike to electric is the equivalent of the carbon captured by 128 trees. Ampersand has successfully piloted an electric motorcycle and battery swap network in Kigali, with motorcycles in daily operation for two years and nearly 2 million km travelled. They have successfully raised $4M in venture capital.
Ampersand is ready to further develop and scale up their tech and scale their operations. The team has grown from a tiny, bootstrapped R&D garage project into East Africa's leading electric vehicle operation, with a team of over 100 staff drawn from diverse backgrounds. They are rapidly scaling their operations, and are looking for innovative professionals who are passionate about clean energy and environmental impact to lead and contribute to their rapid growth.
About the Role
Ampersand is seeking a highly experienced Operations leader capable of managing a diverse and complex team of professionals across their key departments. The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will oversee all of Ampersand’s operations across all their markets and will support the CEO in creating a world where motorcycle transport is cleaner, executing their strategic objectives and maintaining their culture of exemplary service to their customers. Key Responsibilities
Strategic Vision and Follow Through
• Working hand in hand with other members of the Leadership team, setting strategic, operational objectives for the business, along with systems of accountability and performance management. Ensuring the set objectives are implemented
• Developing policies and operating procedures that correlate with the Strategies
• Implementing effective processes and standard operating procedures across the company
• Overseeing compliance with various regulatory requirements and standards
• Ownership of overall Ampersand operational performance and efficiency including revenues and profit margins, product utilisation rates, and customer satisfaction metrics
• Working with various departments to ensure set budgets are adhered to
• Spotting operational problems or potential problems and come up with solutions quickly
Battery Charging Operations
• Accountable for the overall performance and operations for their network of battery swap stations, including station facilities, charge teams, and secondary services
• Managing, maintaining and overseeing partner relationships within their markets and supporting implementation and driving new business opportunities
• Guiding, supporting and overseeing global charge teams in the buildup of charge infrastructure across their business
• Supporting in management of operations innovation trials to maximise battery longevity and station efficiency
Production and Supply Chain
• Having worked in complex manufacturing environments, oversee the entire production process and maintenance of production activities so as to obtain maximum efficiency, quality, profitability and safety
• Analysing production data so as to identify and resolve issues or bottlenecks
• Accountable for supply chain and for continuously improving supply chain quality, reliability and better economics
Sales and Marketing
• In conjunction with Leadership, helping establish sales territories and quotas and overseeing to ensure targets are achieved
• Managing and overseeing Customer Service and ensuring customer retention strategies are in place and successful
• In charge of their online presence

• At least 15 years working experience, with a good percentage of work in emerging markets
• Experience in scaling a start up enterprise plus knowledge of E-Mobility or the energy sector
• A proven track record of operational success in manufacturing/auto/motorcycle/energy distribution and/or retail sectors
• Experience in production of goods and not just re-selling (preferred)
• Excellent communication skills both oral and written and good collaboration with teams
Job Location
This role will be based in Kigali, Rwanda with frequent travel to their offices across East Africa and beyond.
