Terms of Reference Photography Assignment
Rwanda 2022
The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation has defended women’s rights since 1993. For every woman’s right to be safe and to be heard. Today we are one of the world’s leading women’s rights organisations, working directly in areas affected by war and conflict to strengthen women’s influence and power. We work closely together with over 150 local partner organisations across 20 countries to end violence against women, reach lasting peace and close the gender gap once and for all. The future is equal. And together, we are change.
Assignment
The purpose of the assignment for The Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation is to take portraits for stories about our work in Rwanda, this will include portraits of rights holders and women human rights defenders. These images will be used in Kvinna till Kvinna’s external communication, for editorial as well as fundraising purposes, and may also be used by third parties, such as corporations and institutions, collaborating with Kvinna till Kvinna.
We are looking to hire an external photographer with long experience and documented skills in portrait photography. The photographer should have experience in working with NGOs, especially with documenting programme activities.
We are looking for photos “in action” where our interviewees are captured in a natural and active way. We aim to increase women’s power and influence in times of war and conflict and this should be reflected in our photos. Our visual language embraces our core communication values—courage, commitment, and credibility—and we strive to portray women as agents of change, in society and in their own lives.
For this assignment, we are looking for images with two different types of imagery: urgency-oriented and solution-oriented.
Examples Of Urgency-Oriented Material
The focus of these images is to convey emotions. Urgency-oriented photos should highlight different emotional expressions, such as joy, hope, sadness, frustration, determination, strength, and engagement.
Examples Of Solution Oriented Material
These photos should help donors feel that they are contributing to the important work for women’s rights and that they participate in creating real change. Solution-oriented photos should convey empowerment, engagement, activism, and change.
Important Notes
Kvinna till Kvinna’s images should not be exploitative, intrusive, or degrading. Our photos should always be based on respect and dignity and you should particularly bear this in mind when photographing people in vulnerable situations. We avoid depicting anonymous women or women as anonymous objects. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that we collect the correct names of everyone featured in our images.
1. Participation in Kvinna till Kvinna photos is completely voluntary. All individuals who can be identified in pictures must be informed about the purpose of the photos and asked if they agree to participate.
The production lead (from Kvinna till Kvinna) ensures this by:
• Informing the person about Kvinna till Kvinna’s use of photos and alike in external communication, such as on our website, in social media, fundraising activities, collaborations with companies, stakeholders and other actors, etc.
• Asking permission to photograph the person. We only proceed if the person is OK with Kvinna till Kvinna’s use of photos.
• Handing out the document “Photo policy and GDPR at Kvinna till Kvinna” which contains contact details and information.
• When taking photos of children, we must have a written consent. The production lead will ask permission of the parent/legal guardian and ask them to sign the written consent form “Consent to processing of child’s personal data”. The child also needs to give its verbal consent if applicable. We will hand the parent/legal guardian the document ”Photo policy and GDPR at Kvinna till Kvinna” which contains information and contact details.
Kvinna till Kvinna requires the photographer to read and follow Kvinna till Kvinna’s image policy.
