Twin is a non-profit organisation which owns its own trading company. This unique structure allows us to combine trading, marketing and programs to build market systems that deliver better livelihoods for farmer groups in coffee producing countries. Established in 1985, Twin has a strong track record for connecting actors along the value chain, to facilitate deep and global partnerships between small holder producers and their customers. To complete the team in East Africa based in our regional hub in Kigali we are looking for a Sustainable Agriculture Officer. This is an opportunity for the right person to work close to the team in Kigali and London on the delivery of our programme across East Africa.
We are looking for a self-motivated agronomist who has experience of working directly with coffee farmers, who enjoys travelling and is comfortable working both independently and as part of team.
Main Purpose of the Job
The job is part of the Producer Partnership Programmes (PPP) team and supports the operation of African coffee projects. This role involves working very close to producer organization in East Africa to support them on sustainable agriculture initiatives.

Reports to the East Africa Regional Manager but work very closely with the programme officer and finance officer in Kigali.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provides direct technical assistance and training to producer organizations on coffee agronomy and sustainable production
  • Supporting and mentoring the agronomists and field officers who work for Twin’s producer organization partners
  • Support the establishment and maintenance of demonstrations plots
  • Carry out training on standards and sustainable agriculture for staff and lead farmers
  • Support producer to achieve certification and liaise with Certification body
  • Collecting key M&E data to track the performance of Twin’s coffee programme
  • Follow work plan and deliver activities against agreed plans
  • Deliver against plan, maintain records and elaborate field report to be share with internal and external stakeholders
  • Work in cooperation with other agriculture stakeholders
  • Any other reasonable duty as may be assigned that is consistent with the nature of the job and its level of responsibility

person specifications
Qualifications and experience

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in sustainable agriculture or related subject
  • Minimum two years’ experience in working in coffee as field officer
  • Experience in training farmers groups and working with cooperatives
  • Experience in capacity building and organisational support

Skills and abilities

  • Ability to build strong relationship with farmers and producer organization
  • Ability to understand audience and adjust training to their level
  • Language skill: English, French, Kiswahili and Kinyarwanda
  • Good communication skills (written and oral)
  • Ability to write reports in English
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Knowledge

  •  Of smallholder agricultural and producer organizations
  • Of the donor’s requirement and grant management
  • Of organic production methods and different certifications schemes
    To note this role will involve considerable travel around East Africa

Hours of work: this is a Full-Time contract (8 hours a day)

Salary: depending on experience
Contract conditions: permanent upon completion of 3 months’ probation period
Holiday allowance: 25 days per year plus bank holidays and other statutory holidays
