Vacancy title:
School Garden Project Coordinator
Jobs at:
Gardens Health International
Deadline of this Job:
Friday April 27, 2018
Duty Station:
Kigali, Rwanda
JOB DETAILS:
At Gardens for Health International (GHI), we believe that growing and eating healthy food must be part of the long-term solution for malnutrition. We are working to integrate agriculture into the treatment of chronic malnutrition across Rwanda. Our programs emphasize locally appropriate solutions that simultaneously work to address a gap in nutrition education and poor access to nutritious foods.
GHI has an exciting opportunity to partner with the World Food Programme under the Home Grown School Feeding (HGSF) program in the Southern and Western Provinces of Rwanda. The HGSF program is a 5 year project (2016-2021) operating in 104 primary schools in Nyamagabe, Nyaruguru, Karongi and Rutsiro Districts in the Southern and Western Provinces. The Program provides school lunches in order to improve students’ study concentration, performance and dropout reduction. This school lunch is often the largest meal of the day for the 83,000 students in the program and accounts for more than half the attained recommended daily allowances of energy, protein, Vitamin A, iron, and iodine for about 40 percent of students.
GHI is responsible for furthering the HGSF programs nutrition objectives by establishing gardens and delivering integrated nutrition education/life skills trainings to all schools. Through GHI’s School Nutrition Gardens Project, GHI will ensure that students have greater access to fresh fruits and vegetables, in addition to the staple foods provided through the HGSF program. Key learnings will be captured through continuous monitoring, which will inform a broader strategy for incorporating nutrition-sensitive gardening and life skills across Rwanda. GHI will work in collaboration with WFP, World Vision, MINEDUC, MINAGRI and other stakeholders to implement this project.
