Who We Are
Girl Effect builds youth brands and mobile platforms to empower girls to change their lives
We’re a creative non-profit, empowering girls to change their lives. Started by the Nike Foundation, we are experts in media, mobile, brand and international development: a unique mix of skills that we use to solve global problems in a different way.
We work across the world in places where girls are marginalized and vulnerable. We create youth brands and mobile platforms for young people in ways they love and interact with. We deliver these through the media and mobile tech they use every day – from apps that build skills, to TV dramas that explore vital issues, to magazines written by girls.

What is Ni Nyampinga Sakwe?
In September 2017 Girl Effect Rwanda launched Ni Nyampinga Sakwe, a weekly 20-minute drama which sits within the weekly Ni Nyampinga talk radio show. It follows the story of five teenage girls and two boys as they struggle to overcome their challenges, form a singing group and ultimately find friendship. From the beginning, we designed Ni Nyampinga Sakwe to do something fresh and new for Rwandan audiences. It is the first drama with a specific youth audience focus and the first to include music as a core part of its story. Our youth model focuses on fostering creative talent among young people. We plan to recruit to young directors to continue our by youth model. They will require training, mentorship and capacity building to be able to fulfil their new roles as directors on the drama.

Who you are?
You are an experienced radio drama director, with a passion for fostering young people’s talent. You will have a proven track record of creating world class radio drama, ideally for a youth audience. You will have a clear vision of what it takes to become a director and the ability to break these skills down for others. Above all you will be a mentor, who enjoys leading and motivating others to create the very best content. You will be flexible and have worked in complex environments.

What you’ll do?
You will provide both remote and in-country consultancy, including embedding with our Ni Nyampinga team in Kigali for three-four weeks, while leading the recording of series 3 of Ni Nyampinga Sakwe. While in Kigali, you will work alongside our up and coming young Rwandan directors to mentor and support them to work independently when you leave. You will produce an overall recommendation for how directing on the Ni Nyampinga radio drama recording should take place, accounting for the fact that our actors are young and inexperienced and that our drama includes live music recordings. You will help ensure Ni Nyampinga Sakwe is the most compelling, engaging and impactful content in the market and that our young directors own the creative vision of Ni Nyampinga Sakwe through to execution.

Requirements

  • Be able to translate creatively a writer’s, producers and other originators' vision into a coherent, marketable, entertaining radio drama.
  • Ability to foster creative talent in young people.
  • Understand all aspects of radio drama production
  • Be aware of and value the contribution of all crew members to the creation of the final programme, and be able to work with them effectively.
  • Be able to lead a team and to motivate actors and crew members, particularly in a multicultural environment.
  • Show diplomacy and sensitivity when working with Writers, Producers, Actors, crew members and young directors.
  • Be able to conceptualize ideas through audio and sound.
  • Have experience of working with music in production.
  • Have a methodical approach to work, along with a high stress tolerance and stamina
  • Understand when it is appropriate to use sound effects, and how to use them effectively. Ability to guide others on these skills.
  • Have excellent communication skills
    What Else You Should Know
As we continue to scale and grow - we are hugely ambitious for our future and we are looking for people who are driven by this to change the world for girls.
Our teams are a diverse mix across sectors (non-profit and commercial) and specialisms (from Brand and Creative through to Gender and Insight). You’ll learn and grow in an environment that will challenge you to think and work with a fresh perspective.
At Girl Effect, you can expect to work somewhere where you will be stretched and developed in your role, a place where you can build your career and work with talented, engaged people committed to our cause to create a lasting impact.
