• We are Agriterra, a Dutch agri-agency that provides business development services to ambitious cooperatives and farmer organisations in developing and emerging economies. We assist them with advice and training by locally based cooperative advisors and by deploying practitioners from the Dutch and international farmer organisations and (cooperative) companies. We apply a three-track approach: We make cooperatives bankable and create real farmer-led companies, we improve extension services to farmer members and we enhance farmer-government dialogues. Our advisory practice covers the full range of services on management & organization, financial management, governance, business development and lobby & advocacy.
• Agriterra is looking for a highly motivated Project Technical Advisor in charge of providing technical assistance to the project, particularly in relation to results reporting related matters.
Background information on the project Increased maize value chain efficiency in Rwanda
• Africa Improved Foods (AIF) produces fortified foods for infants and breast-feeding women in Rwanda and aims to source at least 50% of its raw materials domestically. However, at present the poor quality of local maize (aflatoxin contamination) prevents the company to reach its objective. The project aims to eliminate aflatoxin from Rwanda’s maize value chain by making the value chain more efficient. This will lead to improved food quality, less postharvest losses, increased farmer income and reduced malnutrition. The goal of the project is to connect local maize producer organizations to the supply chain of Africa Improved Foods, a fortified food producer in Kigali which is currently facing difficulties with finding quality maize in Rwanda. This is an RVO (Netherlands Enterprise Agency) funded SDGP project with the timeline of July 2019 to June 2024.
Position of Technical Project Advisor
• The technical advisor should have strong analytical skills with a proven capacity to support others in a range of evaluation and data collection methodologies. The role involves supporting the SDGP Maize project team in the documentation of impact stories, best practices, learnings and ensuring timely reporting. The recruited advisor will also have to contribute to the implementation process of SDGP Maize project by ensuring consistent, compliance of Agriterra intervention with the overall project desired outcomes.
• To ensure that the project objectives are achieved in full, the job holder will be required to establish a great cooperation and communication with the project team, liaise directly with project partners (i.e. Africa Improved Foods, Sight and Life and local government) and other key maize value chain partners.
Duties
The key responsibilities will be, but not limited to the following:
• Based on the Project Key Performance Indicators, support the project team in reporting the impact stories through video, website articles, PowerPoint slide decks, social media stories, etc…
• Support the project team data compilation for reporting by meeting both the quality and timeliness of reporting.
• Fill timely the project information and achieved results in the Agriterra data system.
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports on project progress based on project activities and indicators.
• Carrying out quarterly project progress review and evaluation and highlighting any project problems/issues arising.
• Track, report, and update objectives, activities, key indicators, and results over the remaining period of the
• Support other project staff through spot checks in the field in order to identify and solve problems in implementation based on data gathered.
• Write different stories on the project progress and share these with the Agriterra communication department for publication.
• Analyse the results achievement by project cooperatives and provide adequate advice or recommendations to both Agriterra and project partners.
• Attending monthly and quarterly Agriterra team meetings to present and assess the achievement and progress of the project.
• Create and maintain a good working relationship with all project partners, namely Africa Improved Foods, Sight and Life, the local government, maize cooperatives etc.
• Perform other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.
Qualification and professional experience
The candidate must hold a Master’s degree, economics, project management, international development, business administration, information technology, computer science, or a related subject or related field.
The experience and skills shall include but not limited to the following:
• Minimum of five (5) years of professional experience in data analysis and external communication.
• Ability to transform project data into appealing impact stories, supported by attractive visuals of project progress and cooperative development.
• Ability to present impact stories in multiple professional formats, including video, website articles, PowerPoint slide decks, social media stories, etc.
• Basic understanding of financial statements of cooperatives, required to interpret the impact of Agriterra interventions.
• Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
• Excellent analytical skills.
• Ability to work in a team and good interpersonal skills.
• Good computer applications skills.
• Good organizational skills.
• Ability to work under time pressure and meet deadlines.
• Excellent written and spoken command of English and Kinyarwanda.
Performance evaluation
• The technical advisor will work under supervision of the Project Manager and he/she will support and work closely with the Agriterra Cooperative Advisors of the Rwanda and Great Lakes team. Evaluation of the performance of the technical advisor will be done by the country team, under supervision of the Country Representative of Agriterra in Rwanda in order to establish areas of further development. A final evaluation will be done at the end of the contract period.
General conditions
• The duty station is Kigali with frequent travels to the cooperative’ locations.
• There will be close cooperation and communication with other cooperative advisors of team Rwanda about planning and exchange of information.
