Job purpose

The Nutrition advisor will provide technical advice to the Health Management Teams and Nutrition Committees at the regional and district levels and health care workers on how improve individual behavior and household practices, promotion of collective actions in communities and creating enabling environment for good nutrition outcomes.

The volunteer will focus on developing sustainable nutrition interventions which involve social behavioral change and communication (SBCC) approach in health facilities and communities.

Note: We are looking to strengthen our talent pool for Nutrition Advisers to be able to respond to upcoming demand. Currently, we are looking to recruit volunteers to work as Nutrition Advisers in Tanzania- to start in February 2019. However, more jobs might be coming up later in other countries.

Responsibilities

  • Assessing nutritional needs and available resources within the community.
  • Provide technical advice to the Regional Health Management Team (RHMT), Health Care Workers on enhancing individual behavior change and household practices, promotion of collective actions in communities and creating enabling environment for good nutrition outcomes.
  • Work in close collaboration with the regional and district nutrition officers, HCW’s to strengthen nutrition committees at the district ward and village levels
  • Engage with the community to educate them about RMNCH specifically on infant and young children feeding including breastfeeding, child diet , and maternal/adult nutrition
  • In collaboration with the RHMT, Nutrition Officers, strengthen nutrition data collection and reporting systems and enhance sharing of nutrition information.
  • Training health workers on delivery of nutrition services including nutrition counselling skills.
  • Support in the development of communication with political, administrative and community leaders on nutrition matters
  • With support from Regional Nutritional Officer, take leadership in training the community health workers so as to reach out to the community with key nutrition messages
  • Coordinate with Environmental health and sanitation advisor to ensure SBCC activities are incorporated in the programme.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Number of nutrition communication materials developed and shared with relevant departments.
  • Improved confidence of health care workers in the provision of nutrition education to pregnant women and mothers of the under five.
  • Availability of nutrition data collection systems/tools
  • Number of training conducted to HCW’s, Nutrition committees, Community health workers etc
  • Report on the nutrition needs and available resources in the community.
  • Increased knowledge on health, water and sanitation and dietary quality in communities.
  • Positive feedback from the partners, HCW’s on the support received from the volunteer
  • Improved provider’s attitude and provider-client relationship in nutrition information, counselling and other nutrition SBCC services.
  • Increased demand for quality nutrition services.

Objectives will be confirmed in a three way discussion between the volunteer, employer and VSO in the first three months of the placement.

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

  • A degree in Nutrition.
  • Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience
  • Teamwork, with the ability to work collaboratively in diverse groups.
  • Ability to work in an institutional environment, hospital and health facility settings and in the community
  • Experience and knowledge in Nutrion and general health.
  • Proven coaching and mentoring skills
  • Effective communications skills (report writing, verbally

Desirable

  • Master’s degree is added advantage
  • Experience of working in nutrition in developing countries.

Personal Qualities

  • Patience, tolerance and resilience will be essential requirements for building mutual understanding with colleagues.
  • The volunteer must be a team worker with good social and interpersonal skills and networking abilities. S/he should be able to handle conflicts in a constructive consultative way.
  • S’/he should have a flexible personality, adapting easily to new situations, and be able to set realistic expectations regarding working in a hospital in the tropics.
  • The volunteer should have a pro-active attitude, enabling him/her to create practical solutions to challenges and demands of a highly frequented hospital.
  • English is spoken by the hospital staff who can assist the volunteer as interpreters during clinical work.

Access to medical care and support

The standard and quality of local medical care and support available at this placement will depend on its location within the country. Health facilities are likely to be more poorly resourced in rural areas in terms of medical expertise, equipment, infrastructure and regular supplies of medication. However, this may not be the case in the capital city or in a larger town, where in some countries there may be a reasonable standard of medical care.
