Description
Job Title: Junior Faculty, Lecturer (Research track)
Reports to: Director of Basic Sciences
Location: Butaro, Burera District, Rwanda
Position Overview
The UGHE Junior Fellows programme is designed to build the capacity of promising young Rwandan physician-scientist-educators. Junior Faculty in Research at UGHE conduct research within UGHE and will receive a one-year research training at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States. This position includes a period of service at UGHE followed by a one-year training appointment at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. The USA-based training appointment will begin on July 1, 2020, and will focus on diabetes prevention research. .

Responsibilities
• Work with a research supervisor(s) to design Rwanda-based diabetes prevention research projects;
• Work with a research supervisor(s) to design and implement other clinical and non-clinical research projects
• Conduct field or laboratory-based research, analyze data, and interpret results;
• Write and submit funding proposals and institutional research board proposals;
• Attend all relevant trainings at NIDDK to develop research capacity and skills;
• Disseminate research findings through publications and presentation in conferences and seminars to contribute to scientific knowledge;
• Participate in the teaching of medical students as a member of the basic sciences division.
• Mentor UGHE students on research projects and advise them on study skills to ensure their projects are relevant and up to the University’s standards; and
• Perform additional tasks as assigned.


Qualifications
• Minimum of a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or an equivalent degree (MD), or a Ph.D. in a health/research field earned and recognized in Rwanda within the last ten years;
• Proven interest in scientific and clinical research, preferably with demonstrated experience in research;
• Computer literacy, with proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite and Google suite;
• Solid foundation in medicine, epidemiology, and no communicable diseases;
• Strong written and verbal English communication skills;
• Exceptional creativity, ethical standards, and motivation;
• Ability to pay attention to detail and quality; and
• Track record of academic excellence.
